AI makes starting easier. Finishing still needs a decision.
A useful tool for turning thought into action can also become an endless source of new directions.
AI can help you finish things. But it can just as easily help you start twenty more things that you will never finish.
That is the tension I keep coming back to. For a curious founder, a tool that can follow almost any line of thought is enormously useful. It also makes it remarkably easy to keep exploring long after exploration has stopped helping.
There is real value in the support
Before AI, turning an idea into a clear piece of writing or an actionable plan could involve a great deal of effort. The thinking might arrive quickly while the work of organising and expressing it took much longer.
AI can help bridge that gap. It gives you something to respond to, helps structure an argument and makes it easier to take a first step. For people whose concentration is uneven, that kind of support can be particularly valuable.
Curiosity has no natural stopping point
A social media feed offers a limitless supply of other people’s distractions. An LLM can generate distractions tailored precisely to your own curiosity.
Every answer opens another question. A product idea becomes a market analysis, which becomes a different product idea, which becomes a new business model. Each step can feel productive. At the end, the original task may still be unfinished.
Give the conversation a job
My practical conclusion is that an AI conversation needs an intended outcome. A decision. A draft. A customer question to test. Something that tells you when the work is done.
For founders, this matters because time and attention are finite. More options are only useful if they help you choose. Before opening another branch of the conversation, it is worth asking whether the answer could change the decision in front of you.
Turn possibility into a next step
There will always be another angle to explore. At some point, progress means choosing a direction and doing something that produces evidence outside the conversation.
Send the draft. Speak to the customer. Test the proposition. Let reality contribute the next answer.
AI can make the distance between an idea and action much shorter. We still have to decide to cross it.
